Colton at 15 months

I can't believe my little man is now 15 months old.  He has grown nearly 2 inches and has gained over 6 pounds!!  I consider this quite remarkable considering he stopped growing at 6 mos of age until just now.

At this stage in life, all I can tell you is I'm exhausted.  To be pregnant and have a little toddler is so tiring, but come August (maybe sooner?), it will be well worth it!

Here's what he's up to now:
- He will kiss my belly and put his ear next to it so he can "listen" to his little sister!
- Sometimes, he will blow raspberries on my belly.  It's quite hilarious.
- He thinks he's invincible - so he jumps off the bed, sofa, or any other surface he can get himself up on.
- He's better about getting his infusions... but he still cries like a mo' fo'!!!
- He walks easily unassisted, but he often trips when he runs.
- He is starting to enjoy toys more vs. just staring at the growing mounds of toys.
- He babbles to himself and everyone else so much, I wish he had a mute button!
- He loves to answer the phone and walk off with it.
- He doesn't nap anymore.  I can't imagine having so much energy.
- He loves to wave good bye and scream HELLOOOOO!!! (but only to people he knows)
- He has an extreme sense of STRANGER DANGER!!
- When strangers tell him he's cute, he loves to smile cutely, or stare intensely.  It's kinda bipolar?
- He loves to run and bury his face between my knees while giggling.  It warms my heart.

I can't believe 15 months ago, he was a five pound little thing that I could easily hold in my palms.  He's now a 20+ pound pint sized human being.  Every day is completely amazing to him and it is for me, too.  He brings me so much joy and it just fills my heart up so much, I feel like it's going to burst at any minute.  I can't wait for him to meet his sister.  I know he will be in love with her.

It's sad to think that she will be my last biological child, but I know that the rest of my life will be filled with tough choices - this is just one of them!  I only pray that God continues to bless our family with love, health, and good fortune (so we can care for our children and maybe adopt two more!).

Updates from the Other Side

WOW!  It's been a long time since I've blogged, but A LOT has been going on.  I'll start backwards by saying...

TA DA!!!  We're expecting bundle of joy #2!!  We should know the sex of the baby by Thursday and we're just over the moon!  We can't wait to meet our little one!

In other exciting news... BT has gained a whole pound!!  I don't know what's more exciting - Baby #2 or the fact that BT has gained a whole pound.  Honestly, they're both miracles, so let's just say they're tied for first!

BT has had lots of doctor and specialist visits, but we're confident he's on the road to getting back up to speed with his growth and weight gain.  That being said... BT IS ALSO WALKING!  As in, he doesn't hold on to anything and just starts walking all over the place!  HOORAY!

Another cool developmental milestone (in my book, at least) is when Colton says, "BYE BAHHHHH!!!" and does his weird little inward wave.  It's quite cute.  I'll have to try to take a video of it.

The last update I have for now is... MY BABY BROTHER GOT MARRIED THIS WEEKEND!! Woohoo!!  Congrats to him and his wife.  I hope they're enjoying their time in St. Thomas!

That's all for now.  Quickie update because I suddenly have a bout of insomnia.

12+ months and so much to talk about!

I can't believe I missed my little man's 12 mos post!  Well, let's just say it's been a busy, busy month!

Things he likes to do now:
- Throw food EVERYWHERE (he finds this hilarious)
- He's getting over his fear of showers and now likes 'em enough to favor them over bath tubs!
- Surprise us by doing things like turning some of his books... RIGHT SIDE UP (he normally likes to read them upside down and backwards)
- Make his UGLY face when he tries out something new to eat
- He now has an extreme fear of eating fish.  I don't know how this happened.
- Sleep through the night if his achey gums don't bother him - unfortunately, those three budding teeth have only JUST now broken the surface.  He's by far the worst teether in the world!

Things he recently learned:
- Today, he looked at me and said, "HI, DAD!" OMG!! I was floored!!  I kept asking him to say it again and he'd do it over and over, but the second I tried to video him, he stopped and started wailing!
- Use his toys as a step stool so he can climb on to other furniture
- How to feed himself (but he will ONLY feed himself french fries - nothing else!)
- How to hold a fork semi-successfully
- How to stand on his own and clap his hands without falling over

At his 12 mos visit, BT was labeled with "failure to thrive".  How devastating for a new parent to hear that!  Since then, I've made it my life mission to make him eat more.  I'm consulting many OTHER parents who've had children with the same label (it's such a terrible label - they need a new name for it, or perhaps it's purposely harsh so people will take it seriously?).  Here's our new regimen for our Little Monster:

1) Only 1 bottle a day (supposed to be no bottle, but a bottle to bed really helps him - and us - out!) of milk.
2) Limit his milk (and by milk, I mean WHOLE MILK!  No more breastmilk and no more formula!) to no more than 16oz. per day.
3) Make him drink from a cup, or sippy cup, or cup with a straw.
4) All bottles of milk are mixed with a bit of chocolate milk or Carnation Instant Breakfast (usually CIB) so he increases his caloric intake.
5) He gets McDonald's or Chick Fil A three times a week - he needs FULL FAT food (this is only temporary as we try to increase his appetite and get his weight up by 3 lbs. 5oz.).  I've been eating lean, resulting in him eating lean and that is NOT GOOD!  My baby needs fat and I'll give him anything he needs to grow and thrive and be a happy, healthy baby!
6) He gets peanut butter every day!  We even tried incorporating avocados, but BT does NOT like that.  We're trying out the egg a day thing now.  He usually spits it all out, but I'll find a way to make him eat those eggs!
7) We pretty much run around with food all day, trying to get him to eat more.
8) Grapes!  Little Man will eat grapes whenever and wherever.  We don't want him to subsist off of grapes, but he gets about 10 of them a day which is way more than necessary, but hey, if it makes him eat...

We're doing everything we can to keep him healthy, happy, and whole!  He has another appointment with the pediatrician when we get back from San Diego and again two weeks after that.  Let's PRAY he keeps growing and gaining weight!!

Product Review: Orbit Toddler CAR SEAT + cool hack

Since April of 2008, I have been in love with the Orbit Stroller System.  We first crossed paths online and then on vacation while I was in San Francisco.  Admittedly, it's heavy, but it's just jam packed with features I haven't found in other stroller systems.

I was hesitant to purchase the Orbit Toddler CAR SEAT (not to be mistaken with the Toddler STROLLER SEAT) because it IS heavy and it does have a pretty hefty price tag.  But travelling with an infant/toddler is never cheap nor is it easy.  We booked our trip to Hawaii and knew we'd need a car seat, stroller, and some convenient storage.  That's exactly what the Orbit System offers!  The Toddler CAR SEAT goes from the Orbit base to the stroller just as simply as the Infant Carrier did. Best part?  I don't even need the car seat base with me to use this while I'm in Hawaii!  WOOHOO!  Less packing = HOORAY!

We bought BT the Orbit Toddler CAR SEAT as one of his birthday gifts (any excuse to justify the cost, right?) and I have NOT been disappointed!  This car seat is very well designed/thought out, as can be expected by Orbit Baby.  Get ready... there's lots of pictures AND a hack towards the end!

This thing is NO JOKE!  It's really, really, REALLY heavy!  Five stars for the awesome packaging, BTW.

A look at the inside packaging.  To the left is the car seat and the two bottom squares house the  bag for the brackets and the paparazzi cover.

Love, sweet love!  The beige head supports are fully adjustable and offer additional cushion in the event of a side impact crash.  Notice the bigger/puffier shoulder cushions - I LOVE THAT!  The clips have a reminder on it that they should be at the baby's armpit level.  All of the cushions can be removed for easy cleaning (I clean the cushions every month because BT loves to make a mess by spilling milk, spitting out half chewed Cheerios, etc.).

Side View.  It's kind of hard to see on this picture but there is a small velcro tab on the side that is a black circle.  The strap for the harness can be velcroed there so that the straps stay "open" for whenever you're ready to put baby back into the car seat.  That little beige marker on the side is actually a pocket for the car seat strap!  This way, when you remove the car seat and use it on your stroller, you don't have cords dangling everywhere.  You just slide it in there and it will be neatly tucked away!

Better view of the side/back.  Did you notice the metal release lever?  NICE!  I like it better than the green handles on my G1 infant carrier and the grey one on my toddler stroller seat.

Back View.  The panel actually opens and serves as storage for the  paparazzi cover and  gives you access to the straps.  I probably should've shown you the inside, but it's quite interesting.  The back panel has two pockets (one for the cover and another one for the loose straps so that again, you won't have loose straps flying around all over the place!) and you can easily store the Ray Shade in there.

The braces bag.

The braces for the car seat when you are not using the car seat base or when you have the car seat forward facing.  I haven't put these on yet because BT is still rear facing and will stay that way until he starts kicking the TV (which should be a long time from now because homeboy is short!).  I want to keep him rear facing as long as possible!  I'll put the braces on this weekend and test out the car seat solo (without the car seat base) and update later about ease of use, etc.

The paparazzi cover spread out.  Oddly, it looks a lot like the Ray Shade, but smaller and shorter.  The fabric is high quality just like the other parts of the stroller.

The paparazzi cover slips in via a clip and you just push to release and pop it back out.

Front view with the paparazzi cover on.

Side view with the paparazzi cover on.  I love the snug fit of the canopy.  THE CANOPY CANNOT BE PUSHED BACK.  It can only be removed.  That bothers me a little bit, but then again, the main function of this is a car seat and not a stroller seat.  The canopy is a nice added plus even for when BT is sleeping in the car because it can block some of the sun falling on his cute face!

 A view from the back.

A close up view of the tight fit for the paparazzi cover.

What the paparazzi cover looks from the inside.  The fabric does well to block out a lot of radiant heat and sun for the small section of shade it can provide.

One of the best aspects of the OBS is that there is no off-gassing of the fabric.  I hate how sometimes you open new things and it just has to be aired out for a few hours (or days).  It's got zero smell.

And now, for the HACK I promised!  The paparazzi cover is a bit short and isn't going to give a good amount of coverage while we're in Hawaii.  Enter... the RAY SHADE by Summer.  This is a universal canopy made to go over existing stroller canopies to extend the amount of coverage/protection.

Since this car seat has a canopy, I knew I had to make it work!  And it did!  See?  SEE?!
Side profile... Check out how much more coverage it gives you!  It will cover him up until his toesies and it gives him about an extra 2" of coverage on the side panels.  Here's the thing though... you can adjust the coverage!  The OBS Toddle Car Seat has two little holes on either side.  I'm not sure what they're used for other than the tension cords, but hell, I use it to attach my Ray Shade.  The Ray Shade utilizes Velcro straps and all you have to do is fold it in half and thread it through the hole and then attach it to the other side.  You can choose the higher hole for a shorter shade length or the lower hole for more coverage.

Here's the shorter side.  Notice how high up it goes?  If you look carefully, you can see the other side (where I put it on the lower hole).

Perhaps this allows you to see how much more the lower hole covers and how the higher hole covers less.

A view from the top.  The left side is the lower hole.  The right side is the higher side.  Note that if you put the Ray Shade on the same hole on either side, it would be completely balanced.  I was lazy and put one up high and one low, but this would help you see the difference (at one time) of how much each hole covers.

To attach the Ray Shade in the back, simply take the back two straps and attach it to the back panel cover's strap!!  HOW EASY IS THAT?!

A view of where the holes are.  This on is the higher hole.  Notice the lower hole at the bottom?  There's a tension cord threaded through these holes for the levers that release the car seat from the base.

Here is the Ray Shade strapped into the lower hole.

And of course, BT had to take it for a test ride immediately.  I love how high it is, so he's able to see through the window a little better when we're on drives.  The adjustable head rest is similar to the head rest on my AirProtect.  BT usually kicks and screams when we try to put him into his car seat, but with this one, he puts up little to no fuss.  I think he really enjoys the up-high view.  A great feature of this car seat is the little velcro tabs you see on the straps.  See those dark round circles right above the red release tab?  When you unsnap the seat harness, you simply attach the tab to the side of the car seat and it stays open/in place for when you're ready to put your little one back in his car seat!  No more putting your little one in and then digging out the straps from behind him!!

Happy Halloween!

BT didn't get to change into his monkey costume or go trick or treating this year!  A late trip to the pediatrician and time spent waiting in the pharmacy for two new meds meant NO TRICK OR TREATING!  Poor guy!  I think he was looking forward to it!  He did get to greet all of the trick or treaters until it got close to his bed time.  Here he is in his lil' penguin outfit he wore during the day.  It's not a costume.  It's just a cute penguin outfit from Gymboree that I snagged at the after Christmas sale last year (yeah, when BT was just 1 month old. Hahaha!)

And here's a really great pic of his two tiny (fully erupted) teef!

Here's the infamous STINK EYE pose!

And of course, the birthday boy at his party!  Check out the jack-o-lanterns on his outfit!  AND the HAT!  How can you not LOOOOVE the HAT?!?!
(The shame... where did his shoes and socks go anyway?  Who took them off?!)

Happy 11 months to BT!

WOW!!  We've managed to keep a human being alive for ELEVEN WHOLE MONTHS!!  What an accomplishment (well, every day actually feels like an accomplishment)!

At 11 months, BT is up to all sorts of stuff!

Things he likes to do now:
- Fight and scream when it's bed time
- Stand up in the tub
- Splash water higher and higher and... all over the darn place!
- Make his "ugly" face (which is actually quite cute!)
- Zoom around in his walker
- Eat everything in sight - even if it's SPICY!  He just wipes his nose and tries to go for more.
- Throwing TEMPER TANTRUMS - ALL THE TIME
- Reading books upside down and backwards (I used to think this was weird, but am told that a lot of babies do it)
- Waking up for night feedings to the tune of 5 oz. each time... WHOA!!  Amazing considering the little guy barely drinks 3 oz. at each feeding during the day time!!

Things he recently learned:
- To do "ET" (you stick out your index finger, he touches it with his index finger - SO CUTE!)
- He likes to grunt and make a fist when he's doing his "MUSCLE!" impression
- Crawl up the stairs
- Jump in his crib while holding onto the crib rails (note to self - need to get some swim noodles!)
- Sporadically saying, "Buh-baa" instead of "bye bye"
- Bouncing his head to the radio - he looooves music!
- Talking out loud when the Church choir is singing!
- How to open the door to my study at home (so he can peek in on me when I'm working!)

Some odd behavior:
- When he sits in his high chair, he has to stick his left leg up or put his feet on this tray table.  WTH?!
- He has to take off his right shoe and hang his left leg over the stroller.  I have no idea why.
- Extreme fear of hats
- Extreme fear of going to sleep?
- Prefers to potty only when I am home
- Has major freak outs after hearing the toilet flush (then he holds his bladder until he literally cannot take it anymore)... I actually have to flush when BT is in the other room so he doesn't get freaked out.

In other news, little man has two fully erupted teef and three at the top that have broken the surface and three more that will break through the gums within the next day or two.  I get ZERO sleep.  BT is by far the worst teether I have ever seen in my life.  He screams then wimpers then screams again and then sobs heavily.  It makes me cry because it's so painful!  The infant Advil only gives very, very minor relief.  He won't use any standard teethers but will chomp on my (clean) fingers occassionally, but it hurts me!  We occassionally try the cold spoons, wet cloths, cold pacifier...  He's just straight up uncomfortable.

With regard to his HIGHLY irregular sleep pattern (he started nine-month sleep regression two weeks early) when he started teething and hasn't been a normal sleeper except the first week after the first two teeth erupted.  After that, he was back to being his intolerable self, but progressively worse.  I feel so badly for him.  All that pain...

He had his first birthday party this past weekend and it was a BLAST to say the least!  I'll have to post pictures up.

Until then, here's a sweet pic of my cutie pie in a penguin outfit.  (Sorry for the fuzzy cell phone pic!)

The desire to look more "Western"

Practically my entire life, I've always known that I did NOT look like the majority of the Asian people I had encountered.  I grew up in a 100% Caucasian town (we were literally the only minority there).  My interaction with other Asians was limited to one day out of the week, twice a month, for a few hours.  It wasn't until I was in HS that I was really exposed to other Asians as my HS was bussing them in from a different city.  Don't even get me started on that whole non-sense.

Anyway, it was always quite clear that people knew I was Asian (usually Chinese or Korean) and thought perhaps I must have been mixed European as well.  "Eurasian" if you will.  Now, I don't deny that many generations ago, when the French occupied Vietnam, there could have been a bit of dabbling in the blood line.  As far as I am concerned, there has been none.  My parents' families all look like the same with the double eyelids, higher nose profiles, softer cheek bones (albeit, still large and not as chiseled), and very fair not-quite-olive skin.

What I don't get is why they keep on saying Asians try to look more "Western".  Why would you call it Western when the desire is really to just look a little bit better?  To look more MAINSTREAM?  Is it because in America, we have this insane belief that we are all the best and everything about us is just bigger or better?  Because if you asked me, if I were to have plastic surgery, it would not be to look more "Western", it'd be to look more beautiful or "mainstream".  Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the way I look, but I often wonder if that has something to do with the fact that I was already born looking more "mainstream"?

Why not say we're trying to look more Swedish?  So many Asians dye their hair blonde and wear blue contacts.  Why not say we're trying to look more Singaporean?  Many women there have large, round-ish eyes with high noses and more fair (less olive) skin.  Why not just say we want to look a little better than we do now?

When Americans get plastic surgery, we don't immediately label them as trying to look more like someone else.  It's just them making themselves look "better".  Personally, I am often annoyed with the whole "trying to look more Western" categorization.  I wish people would just call it like it is - they're insecure with their looks and a different look makes them feel better.

Freaky Toys that Sing in the NIGHT!

Please, God, tell me I am not the ONLY mother in this universe that has experienced the freakishly weird "OMG THE TOYS ARE PLAYING MUSIC AND NO ONE IS TOUCHING THEM!" moments?  Anyone else out there have this happen to them?

When my nephew was little, he had an activity table that would make noise when you touched the various buttons.  It wasn't a fancy schmancy machine with sensitive buttons.  You really had to PRESS DOWN on the button in order for it to make music.  One day, whilst eating dinner, the activity table started to make noise as though someone were touching it and pressing random buttons.  I was scared, but everyone heard it and dismissed it.  A few nights later, my sister woke in the middle of the night and saw her son playing in the middle of the floor instead of sleeping in bed.  When asked what he was doing, my nephew replied that he was, "playing toys with my friend."

I know this sounds crazy, but I believe him!  There are spirits all around us and the pure of mind can see the good ones while tormented ones will see tormented souls.

Fast forward eight years and my Little Monster has this singing lion that he loves so much.  It plays music that magically gets him to drink his bottle (I have no idea why).  Well, it would randomly play music.  It only ever did it when I was the only one around.  I even got a video of it.

I swear, I hate this doll.  One time, I got mad at it and all the sudden, it started singing as if it was broken.  FREAKY!

Peek-A-Boo!!

BT's reaction to opening a very special birthday gift (a wooden rocking horse with guard rail from theEspeys!) was beyond amazing/amusing!  He loved the packaging paper just as much as the gift himself.  He loved to crinkle the paper and do his own version of "peek-a-boo"!

Missing You, Missing Me.

I absolutely HATE being away from BT (aka "Baby Thug" as dubbed by theEspeys!).  Don't get me wrong, I hate being away from theHubs, too, but gosh, to be away from BT... to miss his smell... to miss the cute way his lips try to reach for his bottle or pacifier... to miss bathing him before going to bed... I really hate to miss all of those moments.

What's probably worse is that I'm missing out on some quality time spent with my husband.  All the ups and downs we have had of late, I really feel like RIGHT NOW is the time to be by his side and supporting him and his career.  I also know that the challenges he is currently facing is NOTHING compared to what I face on a daily basis.  I need to remind myself that while I'm missing my BT, I need to remember that there IS someone else who is missing me, too, and that there is another relationship that I must continue to nurture and develop outside of the one that I have as "Mother".  Note to self - GIVE theHUBS A BREAK!

That being said, theHubs has been an absolute angel!  He drove home a full 4.5 hours with BT without so much as a PEEP to complain to me about how bad BT was being!  Can you imagine?  I would have gone bonkers and pulled over for several hours.  theHubs was a complete champion and shouldered the burden... even bringing BT home past his bed time and forcing him to bed (not that it was difficult considering he was exhausted from screaming for practically the whole drive home).

Here are some pretty awesome photos of BT while he was in San Antonio!

ARE YOU TALKING TO ME?!

Where's the car again?

Are you serious?  I have to ride in the back seat... BY MYSELF?!  FOR HOW LONG?!

Well, as long as there is ICE CREAM along the way... I guess I can deal with it!

I guess that's all for now, folks!  This All Employee Meeting wraps up on Tuesday, but I'll be cutting out a little early for a school event where my company is being honored for our commitment to the TX economy AND to the ISD.  How AWESOME is that?!
